The Waste Age 100 – The 15th Annual List of the 100 Largest Solid Waste Firms.

The Solid Waste Industry is battling several problems these days, such as soaring fuel, steel and plastics prices. So, hauling and recycling firms could probably use the news contained in Waste Age’s 100 report: cash flow remains strong.  This article is reprinted from Waste Age Magazine.  This article only provides the top ten companies in the USA.  For a complete listing visit www.wasteage.com

Although there was some shuffling of positions, the firms in this year’s top 10 are the same from the previous listing. With the exception of the firm topping the list — Houston-based Waste Management — the top 10 companies posted revenue increases in 2007 when compared with 2006. Waste Management took in $13.31 billion in revenue last year, a dip from $13.36 billion in the preceding year. In a letter to shareholders in the company’s 2007 Annual Report, Waste Management CEO David Steiner attributes the revenue dip “in part to the shedding of unprofitable business.” The firm’s net income did increase, from $1.15 billion in 2006 to $1.16 last year.

Looking further down the list, revenues continued to rise. For example, Audubon, Pa.-based J.P. Mascaro & Sons, which is at No. 27 on this year’s list, reported $150 million in revenue in 2007, an increase from the $140 million that the hauler took in one year earlier.

In another example, Oakland, Calif.-based California Waste Solutions Inc., the 48th firm in the ranking, brought in $31 million in revenue last year, a nearly 35 percent spike from its 2006 total of $23 million. Also, Houston-based City Waste, which came in at No. 90, reported $8.1 million in revenue in 2007, up from $7.2 million in 2006.

With a possible recession on the horizon, one question facing the industry is: Will revenue growth continue in 2009?  Here is a listing of the top ten companies for last year.
